One of Katrina's small, fit-in-your-hand hearts with a Spiral Zentangle/Doodle design wood burned onto it and then oiled with the clear Danish Oil. After drying, a light coat of iridescent inks was used to add a hint of color. When dried, the painted area was hit with a light coat of spray varnish to protect the paint.
I (Katrina) started my scroll saw training by cutting these little freehand hearts shapes out of Coop's scraps (OY! The scraps he has!) This way, it wasn't critical if I went outside of the line the way it would be if (after spending an hour or so) he drew me up one of his compass and ruler designs, with absolute precision, and I just wandered my way around the lines.... I like doing the burnings on the hearts because it is more relaxed then on some of the intense pieces. It has also allowed me to practice "how-to's", for example, when I was doing my Autumn GreenMan, I did a heart with eyes on it. I was able to try a few different techniques (one was a human eye, one was more dragon) so I knew what I was doing (relatively...) when I started working on the Greenman.
